The inaugural launch title for the PlayStation VR2 system throws you back into the world of Horizon Zero Dawn to be experienced for the first time in virtual reality. Take on the role of a former Shadow Carja, Ryas to assist in locating the source of increased machine activity in the area. Initially captured, Ryas is taken to Dawn's Grasp where he meets Marad and Aloy. They promise his freedom in exchange for climbing the Sunspear mountain, where his brother went to investigate, but never came back.
Horizon Call of the Mountain is the flagship experience for the PlayStation VR2 platform. It boasts some of the most beautiful graphics that the PSVR2 has to offer and allows the player to be completely immersed in the post apocalyptic world that has been created by Guerilla and Firesprite. The eye tracking and haptics features are showcased in depth in this game. Characters follow your eye movements and always know what direction to look at Ryas, and the rumble features in both the Sense controllers and the PSVR2 headset itself make you feel like you are part of the action.
It's incredibly satisfying to draw an arrow from your quiver and pull back to fire in the center of an eye of a Watcher machine. Climbing gives the sensation that you are really increasing in altitude, and the puzzles while not overly challenging allow the player to feel the sense of accomplishment in small wins. Most items in the environment are interactive, whether it be opening crates to find hidden items, or eating an apple to restore the health of Ryas.
There is a very good reason why this was bundled with the PlayStation VR2 headset, as it's definitely a tech demonstration of what the capabilities of the PSVR2. While this is the case, Horizon Call of the Mountain is a fleshed out game that will take you around 8 hours to complete. This title is well worth the price of admission, and should be a must play for any PlayStation VR2 owner.
